Shivani’s recommendation of some Books on Caste
•Annihilation of Caste by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (freely available online and in most Indian languages). For readers more interested in Ambedkar – ‘The Essential Writings of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’, edited by Valerian Rodrigues.
•Bhimayana – Incidents in the Life of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, by Durgabai Vyam, Subhash Vyam and Srividya Natarajan, Navayana Publishers (This is a graphic novel and thus works very well for those getting introduced to caste).
•The Exercise of Freedom: An Introduction to Dalit Writing and Steel Nibs are Sprouting: New Dalit Writing from South India -both edited by K Satyanarayanan and Susie Tharu (This is a collection of short stories, poems and essays from Dalit writers across India, translated into English. Literature always works better than academic texts!)
•Writing Caste/Writing Gender: Narrating Dalit Women’s Testimonios, by Sharmila Rege (A collection of autobiographical extracts of Dalit women, with a brilliant introduction by Rege)
•Urmila Pawar’s autobiography – Aidan (The Weave of my Life) Originally in Marathi and also widely translated in English.
•Bama’s Karukku (originally in Tamil, also translated widely)
•Some specific books for Hindi speaking and reading audiences – Ajay Navaria’s novel ‘Udhaar ke Log’; Dr. Tulsi Ram’s two part autobiography – ‘Murdhaiya and Manikarnika’; Om Prakash Valmiki’s autobiography ‘Jhoothan’ (also translated in English); any issue of the magazine ‘Dalit Asmita’ (which also carries stories, poems and essays by Dalit writers)
•Website Roundtable India (which exclusively covers caste) and Savari (which covers Dalit and advasi women issues)
